Aster Frikartii
Light: Plant in full sun
Temperature: Hardy to zones 5-9
Water: Water thoroughly, but do not let it stay soggy
Soil: Average to dry soil
Comments: Will grow and bloom in part shade, but may need support to prevent flopping. Benefits from a couple of trimmings during the season to make a bushier, more stable plant.
This herb plant is prized for both its long lasting blooms and great form. Upright grower on thick stems, it will maintain its form especially if you take the time to trim back during mid bloom season. We love these cool blue-lavender flowers for the punch they will add to your fall garden, usually dominated by yellows and oranges.
Combine Aster 'Moench' in a garden with meadow grasses and natives. This plant is so much more mildew resistant than other asters, and is hardy to Zone 5. However, a very wet and soggy winter can be fatal, so make sure to cover the crowns with a layer of mulch.
If you are like us, it's important to fill the fall garden with flowers so that we can keep the 'party going' before the first hard frost sets in - add Aster 'Moench' to your line up with the other fall bloomers like Joe Pye Weed and Perovskia Russian Sage
