Elfin creeping thyme plant (Thymus serpyllum) is a low growing (1-2 inches tall) herbaceous perennial with a dense mounding habit. In cold climates, this herb will shed it's foliage, in more milder regions will retain its foliage year round.
This thyme does bloom a flower that will attractive bees! Native to Europe, this creeping variety of thyme is not only drought and heat tolerant, but deer and rabbit resistant, making it a great option for a natural garden landscape plant.
Slightly fuzzy foliage of a growing elfin thyme works great to plant among stepping stones. They are adaptable to foot traffic and will continue to spread while being walked on. Elfin thyme is hardy to USDA hardiness zone 4 and should be planted in full sun and well draining soil, BUT will adapt to shadier areas. Shaded areas of growing elfin thyme will not spread as much as ones with full sun exposure. When growing elfin thyme, the plants require at least five hours of sun per day and should be spaced 6 inches apart.
