Stachys byzantina
Soft fuzzy and silvery foliage contrast well with purple flowers in spring. Lambs Ear Stachys is a drought tolerant ground cover that performs well in poor soils. An excellent groundcover or border for a dry sunny area, its large, woolly, silvery-grey leaves form dense 1' mats; bees love the silver spikes of magenta flowers, & kids love the velvety-soft leaves!
Lamb's ear is appropriately named due to its soft touch and appearance. It was even used in the past to bandage wounds.
It prefers evenly moist but well-drained soil. Remember to deadhead to keep this herb looking its best and to keep it from going to seed - this declines the foliage. Lamb's ear does not need to be pruned for winter, but foliage does need to be cleaned up in springtime. Want to share your plant. It can be divided every 4 - 5 years in spring by removing rooted sections and transplanting.
