Zone 6 Herbs You Can Plant in Your Indoor, Outdoor or Container Garden

There are countless annual and perennial herbs for Zone 6 planting areas, but to get you started, here are a few perfect for gardeners of all skill levels. You may also browse our selection on our website and shop by plant type or collection.

    Catnip

This perennial herb is a favorite among gardeners who are also cat owners. Besides its famous effects on felines, catnip is known for its medicinal properties. In folk medicine of various cultures, catnip is used dried, fresh or brewed as a tea to treat stomach complaints and promote restful sleep.

Catnip is also known as a pest-repelling herb. In fact, the compound nepetalactone in catnip can repel insects as effectively as DEET.

The catnip plant has square stems and gray-green leaves. It can grow up to three feet tall and has white flowers edged with purple during its blooming season.

Catnip is known to have a short lifespan, but with proper care, it can live for two to five years. It can be grown outdoors, in yards or pots, and indoors, as long as it has a sunny spot.

    Catnip needs:
      • Full to partial sun
      • Daily watering until established (once it is, it’s drought-tolerant)
      • Well-drained soil

    Feverfew

Also known as bachelor’s buttons, feverfew is a perennial herb used in herbal medicine. Historically, it has been used to treat various ailments, from fever and headache to stomachache and joint pain.

This aromatic plant is popular in the gardening community for its attractive, daisy-like flowers. Feverfew is ideal as a border plant and may also be planted in rock gardens and pots. You may also grow feverfew indoors.

Feverfew is an excellent pollinator, attracting bees and butterflies to your garden. Meanwhile, it also repels harmful insects, such as mosquitoes and moths, thanks to pyrethrin, a compound found in feverfew.

    Feverfew needs:
      • Full sun
      • Watering only when the soil is dry to the touch
      • Well-drained soil

    Marshmallow

A rare herb, the marshmallow plant originates in Northern Africa, Western Europe and Asia. It is now usually grown as an ornamental plant.

Marshmallow plants can reach up to five feet tall, and during their bloom season from July to September, white to light pink flowers appear among their gray-green leaves.

Marshmallow has been grown for thousands of years for its medicinal properties. In some cultures, marshmallow roots and leaves are used to treat stomach pain, chapped skin and wounds.

Marshmallow is also a culinary herb. Its leaves and young shoots can be used in soups, stews and salads. Marshmallow root powder is the primary ingredient of halva, a sweet confection popular in the Middle East.

This perennial herb is easy to grow and is one of the perennial herbs for Zone 6 that we proudly carry at The Growers Exchange.

    Marshmallow needs:
      • Full to partial sun
      • Regular watering
      • Sandy, moist soil

    What Is USDA Zone 6?

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) developed a scale to help gardeners and growers determine which plants are most likely to thrive in a specific climate. The scale comprises 13 climate zones, each defined by its average minimum temperature. It ranges from the coldest (Zone 1) to the warmest (Zone 13).

In Zone 6, the average annual winter temperature ranges from -10°F to 0°F (-23.3°C to -17.8°C). Zone 6 herbs can withstand these temperatures.

States have more than one hardiness zone. This is because of differences in topography and climate within a state. For example, New York has hardiness zones ranging from 3 to 7.
