Recommended for centuries for the cure to mental disorders and nerve pains, Hypericum perforatum (more commonly known as St. John's Wort) has been proven in contemporary medical studies as an effective treatment for mild-to-moderate depression, anxiety and sleeping disorders. By making teas from the plant's dried flowers or capsules from the extracted essential oils, St. John's Wort is a valuable medicinal herb.
Easy to maintain, common St. John's Wort plants practically grow themselves. Thriving under substandard conditions, this herb prefers sunny, dry places, poor soil and is disease resistant. Try planting in sandy soils such as a beach front garden, or on river embankments as its root system is heralded as a great solution to erosion. Perforate St. John's Wort makes a great ground cover but can be somewhat invasive, so make sure to prune back every other year to keep it in check. You may also want to consider creeping St. John's Wort (Hypericum calycinum) which does not have medicinal properties but is good for landscaping.
If you plan to use this herb medically, be aware that there may be some side effects such as increased sensitivity to UV rays, sexual dysfunction, dizziness and headaches. St. John's Wort may also interact adversely with other medications such as oral contraceptives, so make sure to consult your doctor before using. We are proud to offer St John’s Wort plant for sale.
