Gaultheria procumbens
We are so excited to add Wintergreen to our Rare and Unusual group of herb plants. This is a wonderful evergreen herb plant that makes an attractive ground cover in shady areas. A Native plant, this creeping Wintergreen has both striking foliage and flowers. Leathery oval dark green leaves that can grow up to 2", they turn a striking reddish/bronze color in the fall. Mid summer flowers are white/pink bell-like blooms, almost 1/4" long that become lovely red berries in the fall.
Wintergreen plants do well in full to part sun but does not like direct sun, are very easy to grow and like more acidic soil (4.5 pH). Attracts birds in the fall, they are also pest free and perfect in a rock garden.
Effective against pain, the essential oil in Wintergreen is methyl salicylate, similar to aspirin. A tea is effective in easing fever and headaches, but remember NOT TO give to children or teenagers suffering the flu or chicken pox.
One sniff of the Wintergreen plant leaf will remind you of a lifesaver! These oils are used in toothpaste, candy, breath mints and massage oil.
**Needs part sun to shade in zones 7 and 8**
