Lovely showy flowers, each stalk bearing a spiny orange center surrounded by purple-pink drooping petals. This lovely herb is long blooming, and perfect for naturalizing in large masses, or as a specimen in your perennial or herb garden.
This herbaceous perennial is native to meadows, prairies and wooded areas of central and southeastern US. Easy to grow in full to part shade, Echinacea purpurea is tolerant of less than perfect conditions: drought, heat, humidity and less than perfect soil. A well-know medicinal plant, Echinacea purpurea was used by early settlers on the prairie for almost any ailment. Archaeologists have found evidence that echinacea was used by Native Americans 400 years ago as a general 'cure all', particularly to treat wounds and infections. It has been used throughout history to treat everything from malaria to diphtheria. Although its use dropped with the introduction of antibiotics, purple coneflower echinacea has gained popularity and is used to relieve the duration of the common cold and flu, as well as help boost the immune system. This plant can also help with blood sugar and anxiety!
