Herb Description
These perennial plants are wonderful evergreen shrubs that work well as both a small hedge or as a ground cover. These sturdy little perennial flowers are easy to grow, and do well in almost any zone. If you want a formal hedge or knot garden, simply keep it well-pruned right after blooming. Germander makes a more fragrant and showy alternative hedge shrub than Boxwoods, as it produces small pink flowers and its leaves have a garlic scent that will also make for a nice, aromatic wreath. Germander can also be pruned easily, much like a Bonsai tree for the more creative gardener.
In the past Germander has been used medicinally to cure gout, and has similar properties as Horehound when mixed with honey, for curing coughs and asthmatic episodes.
Because of its creeping root system, Germander makes a great solution for eroding areas such as steep river banks and cliffs and also grows easily in pots or containers.
