These decorative little perennials produce delicious, red strawberries, about twice the size of wild berries but much smaller than the standard type. Also known as "Wood" Strawberries, the Alpine is a more modern cousin of the wild strawberry and was used to develop the bigger, more cultivated strawberries that you see in grocery stores.
We also offer Temptation Strawberry Plants which are a complex hybrid species.
Used for centuries for its many medicinal applications, Alpine Strawberries are high in Vitamin C and antioxidants. The whole plant may be used in teas to aid digestion as the leaves are mildly astringent and the berries when made into a mash, are a relief from sunburn. The berry juice contains antibacterial properties and has been known as a remedy for Typhoid. Aside from being delicious, the berries are also a natural bleach and can be applied directly to the teeth and skin or brewed into a a tea to help whiten your smile.
Also of terrific culinary value, the Alpine Strawberry has a slighter, sweet scent and taste than the cultivated variety that tastes delicious on its own or in jellies, syrups, desserts, teas and cold beverages. The leaves retain their flavor when used fresh or dried and the plant will continuously bear fruit all season long.
Our Alpine strawberries will stay compact and produce few runners, making them suitable for rock gardens, path edgings, pots, and window boxes. These plants begin producing the second spring, sometimes the first fall. Can be grown indoors or out!
